Tokyo Marui Announces Export Release of Officially Licensed Howa Type 20 Gas Blowback Rifle

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's modern standard-issue rifle arrives on August 10, 2026

TOKYO, JAPAN — Tokyo Marui, the world's premier manufacturer of airsoft technology, has officially announced the global export release of the Howa Type 20 Gas Blowback (GBB) Rifle. Developed in close collaboration with Howa Machinery, Ltd.—the original manufacturer of the real-steel weapon adopted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF)—this flagship release brings military-grade realism and precision engineering to international airsoft players and collectors.

Selected by the Japanese Ministry of Defense to replace the long-serving Type 89 rifle, the real Howa Type 20 was built specifically for modern amphibious and close-quarters combat (CQB). Tokyo Marui’s GBB replica faithfully reproduces every contour, material choice, and tactical control of the original platform.

Howa Type 20 Gas Blowback Rifle: Key Product Highlights & Features

  • Official Licensing & Authentic Engineering: Features official Howa Machinery markings and "MADE IN JAPAN" upper-receiver engravings. Materials directly mirror the real firearm, utilizing extruded and CNC-machined aluminum for the handguard and upper receiver, and fiber-reinforced nylon resin for the lower receiver, stock, and grip.

  • Proprietary Z-System & Oval Piston: Engineered with an innovative oval piston design that delivers a hard-hitting recoil impulse while preserving authentic scale dimensions. Tokyo Marui’s proven Z-System acts as a shock absorber, protecting the bolt catch from wear over extended use.

  • Full Ambidextrous Controls: Dual-sided selector switch, magazine release, and bolt catch allow seamless operation for both left- and right-handed shooters. The charging handle can also be swapped to either side in seconds.

  • Modular M-LOK Handguard & Monolithic Rail: Includes an integrated top 20mm Picatinny rail for optics alongside M-LOK side and bottom slots. Out of the box, the rifle comes with three M-LOK rail segments (2x Short, 1x Medium) and six textured rail covers.

  • Authentic Field Stripping: Pin-retained receiver layout permits quick field-stripping and direct access to the adjustable hop-up chamber.
